While the air is cold and the bugs are away we are using the manure to save the trees. We began depositing the paddock manure around the base of the hillside trees. The soil is eroding, exposing the roots, endangering the trees. The manure will turn into beautiful compost and feed and protect the trees. It is working, holding in place and protecting the roots. Hopefully we will see lots of leaves emerging in the spring!
A place for our friends to follow the life and adventures of Murph, Michelle, Zach and Scout. We are living a life filled with love for each other our rescued animals and the natural world around us. We are a police officer and fire fighters, vegans, horse lovers, adventure seekers, homesteading our little piece of the world on Cape Cod and unschooling our daughter Scout. Join us on our journey.

Harvesting
As summer comes to an end we begin preparing to store our harvest for winter.
The hurricane left us lots of firewood...
Onions braided....
this sunflower actually survived the mice, hiding it in with the asparagus worked!
potatoes drying...
the melons didn't get big but...
they were delicious!
Always lots of little helpers
Happy Harvesting

All is well
We had a busy weekend. Before leaving for a day of skiing we made sure the animals were ready for the cold snap.
A big bowl of porridge for the chickens.
Extra hay for the horses.
Everyone pitches in.
Two new rescued roosters arrive.
Arriving at the ski lodge.
Hot dogging with Daddy.
We love spending time together outside.
Back at home all the animals did great with Zach and Sam taking care of them.
The new roosters were accepted into the flock.
Life is Good!

Farm happenings
Happy Labor Day! We will spend the day together with friends and we hope you will be doing the same!
The new Sussex lights are growing fast. We really like this breed (not that we don't love the orphingtons). They have a nice song that reminds us of shore birds, they are very friendly and inquisitive and leave beautiful feathers around the yard. They have not started laying yet, hopefully in the next month. Stand by for a photo of the new chickens and rooster...we had a chicken rescue in the midst of preparing for the hurricane.
We finally found a wheelbarrow just her size. Scout is trying to help push the big one and now she has her own! She likes to help with everything we do. We are always sure to take the extra time to let her help. She gets so much pride and feeling of being a part of the family. We feel this is very important for us to always do.
Surveying the property!
Sharing Tonto with friends. Tonto has gotten lots of attention this summer. Scout is riding more frequently and for longer now. She has a beautiful seat and only requires assistance staying on board occasionally. Tonto is such a good girl, she is making a great companion for Scout. I can't wait until we can go trail riding together...taking our schooling out into the forest for the day, what a dream!
The party girl ready to go
Exploring the giant fungus growing alongside the driveway
Now 20 months old, completely potty trained and talking well enough to tell you exactly what she wants. It is going by fast but we are enjoying the journey. We are so happy to have Zach here to enjoy it with us.
