Today in the garden

This year I am off to a shot gun start in the garden. It is April and I am eating fresh from the garden and even supplying my first share this weekend! Over wintering food in the garden, starting early (risking that the mild weather would continue), having raised beds that don't really require much work to get them going in the spring have all contributed to great success already!

Take a look at the garden today

Today in the garden

Raspberries, asparagus, onions, garlic, swiss chard, spinach, lettuce, peas, radish, beets, kale and celery are all showing themselves.....harvesting spinach and swiss chard!

The orchard is blossoming!

The fence and gate are finished!

I have learned, through trial and error, how to do it. The more you experiment and try the faster you will learn. Don't be overwhelmed by the process. Every year I learn a little more and the garden gets a little bigger and better. Last year we ate all summer without hardly going to the grocery store. I saved seeds from the things I bought at the farmers market to try in my own garden. I salvage what others throw away to make my fence, gate, beds and garden art. I ask questions, read books and just try it. We bought a used freezer to store for the winter. Not being excited about the thought of canning I decided to try freezing tomatoes. Just chopped them up, skins and all, and put into freezer bags in portions to make sauce and soups. They were awesome! You won't know if you don't try. Right now we are eating blueberry pancakes from the berries we saved from last year, when they were in season, and we stockpiled them.

The garden is just one way we are trying to become self sufficient and debt free. Interested in learning more about gardening? You are welcome to stop by, take a tour, ask questions.

Egg Hunt Party 2012!

This posting is a little late...but hey, better late then never!
We had and awesome time, the weather was beautiful, the bunny was generous, the friends were plentiful. If you missed the party we hope you make it next year!
